When you lock on to a player, you can easily hunt him. He is now the
blinking dot on the radar, and the blue dot on your HUD tells you which
way to fly. The bigger the blue dot, the closer you are to him. When it
start blinking, he is real close.
When you have locked a player
His shipshape becomes filled.
His name will appear above your HUD
His shipshape will appear above your HUD just to the right of his name.
The distance in blocks will be shown in the rightuppercorner of your HUD,
unless you are in a map with limited lives. If you are in a map where you
do have limited lives, the number will indicate how many lives that player
has left.
And when you have locked a player you can fire smart missiles at him
or use your tractorbeam on him.

Is there a way to UNlock? I sometimes wish for this when on a map that has enabled remote viewing. I would like to see my own vicinity before unpausing.

No there isn't. A lock can only dissappear if the player you've locked onto quits.
On the other hand, you can't see your own vicinity either when you've just joined the game.
